The first section tells the story of how, during the terrible winter of 1916 – 17, the small wartime city was built, how it was strengthened and reinforced during the summer, how life was lived there. The section ends with the stories of the first excursionists who, as soon as the war was over, climbed atop the Pasubio. The city is still there, in front of their eyes. It’s whole but abandoned, a ghost town.
