There are four main trails to reach Porte del Paubio and the Papa Lodge.

1. The Road of Tunnels (CAI trail 366)
This is actually a mule track and one of the most famous and popular trails of the pre-alpine area. About 50.000 people walk it every year. Built in 1917, during the Great War, it’s an engineering marvel that takes you, among peaks and pinnacles, to the heart of an extraordinary and ever-changing landscape.
We told its story in the 2017 exhibition celebrating the Centenary of its construction www.stradadellegallerie.it
Starting point: Bocchetta Campiglia (m 1216).
You can reach it by car. Though there are many available paid parking slots, during summer weekends the lot fills quickly and it is possible not to find any available spots.
Altitude difference: 784 uphill
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Difficult

2. Val di Fieno Trail (SAT 179) and then Road of Heroes (CAI 399)
The trail, which starts in Pian delle Fugazze, climbs up along the Val di Fieno, cutting across the hairpin turns of the drivable military road built during the war, which reaches the d’Havet Gallery. From the Gallery exit onward the trail continues along the Road of Heroes, built in 1936-37 following the route of the wartime mule track, cutting across the steep walls overlooking Val Canale, in a landscape of great vastness and beauty. Its story is told in the third section of the exhibition.
Starting point:Pian delle Fugazze Pass (m 1162). Paid parking is available.
Altitude difference: 766 uphill
Duration: 2.30 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

3. CAI Val Canale Trail (CAI 300)
This is the oldest and most traditional path to Porte del Pasubio. During the war, transformed into a mule track, it was maybe the main access point to the Pasubio and it was flown over by many cableways. Time, snow and rain transformed it back into a trail.
Starting point: a quota 1100 m, poco prima del Pian delle Fugazze (m 1162) venendo da Valli del Pasubio (segnalato da tabelle).
Altitude difference: 828 uphill
Duration: 2.30 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

4. Scarubbi Road (CAI 370)
This itinerary is seldom walked uphill. It’s mostly used by those who have reached Porte del Pasubio using the Road of Tunnels, since both itineraries have the same starting point (Bocchetta Campiglia) and ending point (Porte del Pasubio), thus creating a circuit. The road is driveable, and it was also built during the war to serve the front, but the CAI trail cuts across most of its hairpin turns.
Starting point: Bocchetta Campiglia (m 1216).
Altitude difference: 712 uphill
Duration: 2.30 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

For those climbing the Pasubio, especially via the Road of Tunnels, Porte and the Papa Lodge are usually the final destinations, then starts the way down. However, the heart of the Pasubio is full of wonders to be discovered, it’s a plateau where peaks follow valleys, bumps follow dips, in a vast, high mountain landscape, exciting and wild, full of itineraries where history and nature mix. We advise planning an overnight stay. We’ve chosen to describe, very shortly, two itineraries, both fundamental. At the Lodge you can request detailed information as well as advice for other excursions.

1. From Porte del Pasubio, a circular route of the sacred area (CAI 105, CAI 142, CAI 120)
This is the perfect itinerary for a visit to the Pasubio battlefield, the most popular one. You enter the heart of the territory that for two and a half years was the home of thousands of men that faced off in the trenches, caverns and galleries carved out in the mountain. The itinerary takes to Cogolo Alto, to the Palon (the top of the Pasubio, m 2232), to the Dente Italiano and the Dente Austriaco, passing, as you walk down the small valley between the two, ravines caused by the explosion of the last Austrian mine. You can see sections of walkways and trenches, underground tank remains, and you come across many galleries: the General Papa Gallery, recently restored, wide and exciting, but also part of the system of galleries on the Dente Italiano. The landscape is rugged, powerful and evocative, its horizon offers a view of all surrounding peaks. It requires 3 hours, but it would be best to take more time order to stop and explore.
Starting point: Porte del Pasubio, Rifugio Papa
Altitude difference: 350 in salita, con saliscendi
Duration: 3 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

2. From Porte del Pasubio to the Lancia Lodge and back (CAI 105 and CAI 120 or the other way around)
This trail is very interesting in terms of both history and landscape. You can walk across the entire Pasubio plateau in a circular route. The first section (or the last one if you are walking the other way) crosses the sacred zone and coincides with the first section of the previous itinerary.
Starting point: Porte del Pasubio, Papa Lodge
Altitude difference in the first section, from Papa to Lancia: 304 uphill, 430 downhill
Duration: 3 hours
Altitude difference in the second section, from Lancia to Papa: 397 uphill, 271 downhill
Duration: 2,30 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
